Chapter 26

Corvin

She was hiding something. Looking back over my shoulder, I saw her holding my brother’s hand as she calmly told us about the annihilation of an entire race of people.

Why wasn’t she angry? Broken? These were her people, but she might as well be telling us about the best way to butcher a pig.

I didn’t trust her.

As soon as the doors to the throne room had opened, and I’d been hit with her delicious scent, I knew it was another trick Hel was playing on us. She’d taken great enjoyment in making us watch the two mages take her, even if she didn’t know that my brother and I were reeling from this woman who felt like our mate. Hel would never have let us go if she’d suspected. The bitch just thought we were going insane from the length of time it had been since we’d enjoyed the touch of another. And I wasn’t counting the unwelcome touches that had come from her.

We’d been Hel’s playthings for far too long, and I didn’t know if I’d be able to do that with another again. Not without seeing the look on my brother’s face when she’d made him perform in front of me. It was no doubt the same one he’d seen on my own.

Hel had broken us. We liked to argue otherwise, but it was impossible not to be after being in her tender care for so long. There was only so many times you could push your emotions beneath the surface before you lost touch with them entirely. And mine had sunk into the bottomless black hole inside of me decades ago.

I’d tried to protect Bran from the worst of it. He was the gentle one between the two of us. But it had been impossible. Not with the length of time she had imprisoned us there.

I didn’t realise that he’d left her side until I felt his hand on my shoulder. “How long until we reach the mountains?”

I shrugged. It had been so long since we’d travelled through Asgard that even the feel of fresh air on my skin felt foreign. I was fairly certain any rebellion force would have taken residence in the mountains. There had been whispers of it before we’d tried to abandon Odin and been banished for the audacity of thinking we had that level of freedom. Hopefully, they were not only still there, but they’d intercept us along the way. Otherwise, I had no idea how we were going to find them, and I sure as hell wouldn’t ask the three people behind us.

“I like her,” Bran suddenly blurted out.

My head snapped to the side to look at him in surprise before I peered back behind us to make sure the others hadn’t heard. The three of them were several steps behind us, talking between themselves. I could see the two mages trying to draw the female into a conversation, but she seemed distant for some reason. It wasn’t my problem.
